Choose the car and city

What the on-road price is made of

The ex-showroom price is what the maker charges. Before the car can leave the showroom it has to be registered and insured, and the state collects its road tax. Together, that is the on-road price.

Ex-showroom price

The car's price at the dealer, with GST and cess already in it.

Registration

The state's road tax, which varies with fuel and price, plus RTO fees and any city cess.

Insurance

First-year comprehensive and three-year third-party cover, priced by engine size and city.

TCS

1% on cars above ₹10 lakh, which you can claim back in your income tax return.

Frequently asked questions

How much more than the ex-showroom price will I actually pay?

Usually roughly 10% to 30% more, depending on your state, the car's fuel type and its price. Road tax is the biggest part and it climbs with the price in most states, so the gap is wider on costlier cars. Pick your variant above to see the exact amount for your city.

Why is the same car priced differently in different cities?

Each state sets its own road tax, which also changes with the car's fuel type and price. Some cities add a municipal tax, and the insurance premium depends on the city's insurance zone. Compare two cities above to see the difference.

Do electric cars pay road tax?

It depends on the state. Several states waive or reduce road tax and registration fees for electric cars, while others charge them in full. The calculator applies your state's rule for the variant you pick, so an EV can show a much smaller registration amount than its petrol twin.

What is TCS, and do I get it back?

Tax collected at source: 1% of the ex-showroom price on cars above ₹10 lakh, collected by the dealer. It is not an extra cost in the end, because it is credited against your income tax and you can claim it back when you file your return.

Can I buy the car insurance from outside the dealer?

Yes. The dealer's quote includes insurance, but you are free to buy the policy from any insurer, and a quote from outside is often cheaper. The one thing that is fixed is that a new car must have its third-party cover, which the on-road price already counts for three years.

Which charges can I negotiate, and which are fixed?

Road tax, registration and TCS are set by the government, so they cannot be negotiated. You can bargain on the dealer's discount, the insurance premium and the accessories or extended warranty the dealer offers, which are optional. A discount on the car's price is where most of the saving is.

Is this the final price the dealer will quote?

Treat it as a close estimate. The calculator covers the ex-showroom price, registration, insurance and TCS. The dealer's quote can also include accessories, an extended warranty, handling or FASTag charges, and the maker can revise prices at any time, so ask for the quote in writing before you book.
